My Top 10 Heavy Metal Detox Tips & Strategies

The dementia stats and in particular for women in Australia, are seriously alarming!

It is now the #1 leading cause of death for women in Australia.*

This is a topic is something that I am becoming passionate about as I think everyone I know, my family included has been affected by a loved one getting a dementia diagnosis.

So what are some of the reasons for an increased risk of dementia?

They are:

Insulin resistance, lack of Vitamin D, environmental toxins such as heavy metals, EMF, lack of movement or exercise, heart disease and a nutrient deplete diet, amongst others.

But the good news is there are ways to help prevent dementia or Alzheimer’s with lifestyle changes such as:

  1. Have a diet based on clean foods – so that means eliminating processed foods and foods high in sugar, and eat a mainly plant based diet.
  2. Get exposure to sunlight daily.
  3. Get quality sleep.
  4. Optimise your gut health – hello fermented foods – check out my fermented onions recipe HERE.
  5. Exercise and movement.
  6. Detox – this is a big one as it’s no longer something you do once a year, detoxing should be done on a daily basis.

So in this blog I am sharing with you my top 10 My Top 10 Heavy Metal Detox Tips & Strategies.

They are:

  1. Kelp: Rich in alginates, kelp binds with heavy metals, facilitating their elimination from the body through natural processes. Kelp is best taken as a supplement. Please check with your Naturopath or functional doctor before taking if you have thyroid issues.
  2. Bentonite Clay: This is an effective cleanser. Known for its strong adsorbent properties, bentonite clay attracts and binds heavy metals, preventing their absorption and aiding in their removal. Purchase food grade bentonite clay and take daily in the evenings week on, week off.
  3. Activated Charcoal: With its porous structure, activated charcoal traps toxins, including heavy metals, preventing their absorption in the digestive tract and supporting detoxification.
  4. Fulvic & Humic Minerals: These minerals help in chelating heavy metals, forming complexes that the body can excrete more easily, reducing the burden on organs like the liver and kidneys. Taking these minerals also helps us absorb and use other nutrients better.
  5. Fibre: Aids in the elimination of heavy metals through directly binding to them and then moving them through the system and out of the body. Other toxins may also bind directly to fiber rather than bile for elimination. Eating a mainly plant based diet is one to guarantee getting your daily fibre fix.
  6. Coffee Enemas: Stimulating the liver, coffee enemas enhance the production of glutathione, a potent antioxidant that supports the detoxification of heavy metals. To learn how to do coffee enemas at home, watch my YouTube video HERE. Depending on your current health situation you can do enemas daily, weekly, or monthly for maintenance.
  7. Coriander: Not only my favorite herb to use in many recipes, smoothies, dressings, Coriander contains compounds that bind to heavy metals, assisting in their removal from tissues and facilitating excretion. Coriander is a powerful medicinal herb, so use it where ever you can.
  8. Spirulina or Chlorella: These algae are rich in chlorophyll and other compounds that help bind and eliminate heavy metals from the body.Spirulina works as a chelator, meaning it can “bind”, and aid as a natural detoxifier removing metals form our bodies. As a spirulina cell has a large surface area it has the ability to chelate the metals and expel them through our urine. It also an incredible vitamin, mineral and protein profile.Chlorella has a unique ability to bind to heavy metals, such as mercury, lead, and cadmium, and remove them naturally through the digestive system. Chlorella also has chelating properties, which means it can help to remove heavy metals that are already stored in the body’s tissues. You can take these supplements in powder or tablet form, check out your favorite online supplement provider or health food store and stock up.
  9. Fermented Foods: You know by now I am a raving fan of fermented foods, not only for the boost in gut health, the beneficial microorganisms creates natural chelators that are available to bind toxins and help remove them from the body.
  10. Chelating Supplement: These usually contain specific chelating agents, like EDTA or DMSA, and are usually taken as supplements or via IV, to bind with heavy metals, aiding in their elimination from the body.
Something to note with Chelating supplements is to not overdo it as they may, over time, start to bind to healthy minerals needed for the body and excrete them as well. I would recommend seeking the advice of your Naturopath or functional doctor before considering taking chelating agents.Lastly, if you do incorporate these 10 top tips to detox on the daily, I recommend taking a liver support supplement as your liver will be working in tandem to help process detoxification.
