Superfoods…It’s a buzz word we see everywhere these days, but what are they really and how can we get them into us efficiently?

There’s an amazing array of Superfoods out there that offer an abundance of health benefits such as antioxidants, vitamins and minerals. While normal foods may have nutrients, Superfoods bring them in bulk and/or possess harder to find elements like B12 or Omega-3.

Here at The Raw Food Kitchen our cupboards are packed with a wide variety of them, including Cacao, Goji Berries, Maca, Spirulina, Chia, Acai, Maqui and Chlorella – check out what they can do for us!

Cacao  can help lower insulin resistance and shield nerve cells from damage, Goji Berries can help promote mental well-being and calmness, while Maca has great mood balancing properties.

Spirulina might not look the prettiest, but this Green Genie gets a lot of attention for its anti-inflammatory properties, high protein (a whopping 65%!) content and amino acids – the building blocks of our cells.

Chia Seeds deliver a massive amount of nutrients with very few calories, making them a great addition to your meals if you’re trying to lose weight; they’re loaded with antioxidants, fibre and high quality protein which will keep you fuller for longer.

Both Maqui and Acai Berries a great source of antioxidants – one of the first lines of defence that the body employs to keep free radicals in check and prevent them from causing a domino effect of damage on other cells.

There’s no doubt that adding Superfoods to your daily diet will help increase the amount of nutrients you’re taking in.

How Do We Get Them Into Us?

Superfoods are becoming increasingly easy to get hold of – many supermarkets have recognised the demand for them and routinely stock them.

Some great ways to get Superfoods into us is to look at combining fresh foods that are already available and super charging them! For example, green veggies are packed with iron ( and so is dark chocolate!) Increase the absorption of iron by combining with Vitamin C – think adding orange segments to a green smoothie made with Spirulina or Goji  Berries with dark chocolate. Both taste divine and a good for you as well!

Tomatoes are high in lycopene, a great antioxidant and it works well with healthy fats such as those found in avocado…and it’s a winner in the flavour stakes too!

Vitamin C is already a well known feature of citrus fruits. Limes in particular were renowned for battling scurvy and led to the nickname US forces gave to British servicemen who consumed them relentlessly – Limeys!

All unprocessed food from the major food groups could be considered ‘super’ and are certainly useful as part of a balanced diet. Add some unique Superfoods such as Maca, Goji, Cacao or Chia Seeds to your already healthy well balanced diet and watch your inner radiance shine from the inside out!

Maca, Cacao, Acai and Maqui are all easily added to smoothies and juices, while Chia Seeds can be sprinkled over anything and everything –  if you add them to smoothies or juices they thicken them up to a beautiful thick texture.
